What's New
November 3, 2011:
Large updates:
- Added data for the 2009-10 academic year. Note that the 2009-10 data for graduation rates from IPEDS and for financial aid from IPEDS are not yet available from the Department of Education.
- Added data for the 2008-09 academic year:
- Graduation rates (IPEDS)
- Financial aid-Full-time freshmen (IPEDS)
Technical updates:
- The variable “Per capita nonfederal debt of graduates” is now marked as missing when the value for “Per capita federal debt of graduates” exceeds the value for “Per capita debt of graduates.” This occurs when colleges report inconsistent values for the overall cumulative debt variables (“Percent of graduates with debt” and “Average debt of graduates”) and the cumulative federal debt variables (“Percent of graduates borrowing federal loans” and “Average debt of graduates in federal loans”).
- The aggregated figures for the percentage of full-time freshmen receiving different categories of aid (e.g. “% of full-time freshmen who received any grants”) now include only those colleges where the number of full-time freshmen receiving that category of aid and the number of full-time freshmen are both available in the source data.
October 21, 2010:
Large updates:
- Added data for the 2008-09 academic year. Note that the 2008-09 data for graduation rates from IPEDS and for financial aid from IPEDS are not yet available from the Department of Education.
- Added less-than-2-year and non-degree-granting colleges.
- Added aggregations to institutional control, such as averages for all public colleges in California. Users can also now search for colleges by institutional control under "Advanced Search" or "Search by Criteria."
Variable additions:
- Office of Postsecondary Education identification code (6-digits). (IPEDS)
- Unique identifier for system at which some data are reported. For more information about systems, see the Limitations page.
- Eligible for Title IV federal financial aid funding. (IPEDS)
- Academic year or program year reporter in IPEDS - Institution uses a traditional calendar system (academic year reporter) or has continuous enrollment (program year reporter). (IPEDS)
- CIP (Classification of Institutional Programs) code of largest program, for colleges with nontraditional schedules. See http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/ for more information about CIP codes. (IPEDS)
- Counts and proportions of undergraduates enrolled for credit during the 12-month academic year who were American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, non-Hispanic White, foreign/international, multiracial, or whose race is unknown. Note that the multiracial (reporting two or more races) category is not mandatory until 2011-12. (IPEDS)
- Counts and proportions of undergraduates enrolled for credit during the fall term who reported two or more races. Note that this reporting category is not mandatory until 2010-11. (IPEDS)
- Counts and proportions of full-time faculty who reported two or more races. Note that this reporting category is not mandatory until 2010-11. (IPEDS)
- Number of graduate certificate recipients during the 12-month academic year. (IPEDS)
- Number of master's degree recipients during the 12-month academic year. (IPEDS)
- Number of doctoral and first-professional degree recipients during the 12-month academic year. (IPEDS)
- The number and proportion of degree-seeking full-time freshmen who received any grant aid, as well as the average and per capita amounts received. (IPEDS)
- The number and proportion of degree-seeking full-time freshmen who borrowed federal student loans, as well as the average and per capita amounts borrowed. (IPEDS)
- The number and proportion of degree-seeking full-time freshmen who borrowed nonfederal student loans, as well as the average and per capita amounts borrowed. (IPEDS)
- The per capita cumulative student loan debt of graduates - total (federal and nonfederal), federal, and nonfederal. (CDS, Peterson's)
- The percent of total student loan debt of graduates composed of federal loans, as well as the percent composed of nonfederal loans. (CDS, Peterson's)
- The percent of 12-month enrollment, as reported to IPEDS, receiving Pell Grants. (Derived from Pell and IPEDS)
Technical updates:
- Due to inconsistent program lengths, the aggregated figures for the cost of attendance variables no longer include colleges with nontraditional schedules (program year reporters).
- To more accurately reflect the population for which the cost of attendance figures are reported, we changed the frequency weight for the aggregated averages from the number of undergraduates to the number of full-time freshmen.
- We adjusted the formula for calculating the number of dependent students enrolled during the 12-month academic year to more accurately reflect the variation between sectors in the percentage of undergraduates aged 24 or younger who are dependent. To estimate the total enrollment age 24 or younger, we multiplied the unduplicated count of 12-month undergraduate enrollment, as reported on the FISAP, by the percentage of undergraduates age 24 or younger (from IPEDS). The, the total number of dependent students was then estimated as 90% of this number for public 4-year and private nonprofit 4-year colleges, 50% for private for-profit 4-year colleges, 80% for public 2-year colleges and private nonprofit less-than-2-year colleges, 70% for private nonprofit 2-year colleges and public less-than-2-year colleges, 55% for private for-profit 2-year colleges, and 60% for private for-profit less-than-2-year colleges, based on averages from the 2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. (Derived from FISAP and IPEDS)
- We now calculate aggregate figures for the percentage of all undergraduates who are full-time freshmen based on the sum of values at the college level for the numerator and denominator. Originally, this figure was aggregated using weighted averages of institution-level data.
- The Pell Grant data in College InSight are now presented at the 6-digit OPEID level rather than the 8-digit OPEID level. As before, this means that Pell data are available at the institution level (and higher aggregations) for most institutions in College InSight, but for others, Pell data are only available at the system level and higher. More about our process for matching campus-level data across data sources can be found on the Limitations page.
